THE PROBLEM
Merchants needed a fast and reliable way to accept RC365 Mastercard payments alongside other card types, while maintaining a simple and efficient checkout flow.
Existing payment processes lacked clarity and did not support quick transaction handling in high-pressure retail environments.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS
Instead of traditional heavy research, this design was guided by constraints of real-world POS usage:

-
High-speed transaction environment with minimal tolerance for friction
-
Repetitive daily usage requiring fast, predictable interactions
-
Need for clear distinction between multiple payment methods
-
Immediate confirmation and receipt generation after payment
INSIGHTS #1:
Merchants tend to prioritise speed over accuracy in checkout flows, often relying on the most familiar actions rather than exploring options.
INSIGHTS #2:
When multiple payment methods are available, users hesitate if the system does not clearly distinguish between options.
INSIGHTS #3:
In high-frequency transactions, immediate confirmation (including receipt feedback) helps reduce uncertainty and build trust in the process.
TARGET USERS
Retail merchants processing high-frequency transactions in a fast-paced retail environment.

IDEATIONS
Explored ways to simplify checkout flow and reduce friction in high-frequency transaction scenarios.
HOW MIGHT WE...
#1:
Enable merchants to complete payments faster under high-frequency transaction conditions?
#2:
Help users clearly distinguish between multiple payment methods without adding cognitive load?
#3:
Provide immediate and clear transaction confirmation to reduce uncertainty after payment?
KEY FUNCTIONS
The ePOS system enables merchants to set payment amounts, accept customer tips, and collect digital signatures during transactions.
After successful payment, the system generates an electronic receipt that can be shared with the customer instantly.

Amount & Tip
Combines payment amount and optional tips in a single step to speed up checkout and reduce interaction friction.
Payment Method Selection
Allows merchants to quickly select between RC2.5 Mastercard and other card types with a clear and structured layout.

Signature Screen
Enables customers to confirm transactions with a digital signature directly on the device for secure verification.

How the E-receipt send
NICE TO HAVE
These ideas are not reflected in the prototype, but I believe would positively improve the user experience based on observed user needs
Basic Refund Flow:
Enable handling of simple refund or cancellation requests for completed payments.
Receipt Re-access within System:
Allow merchants to retrieve and re-check previously generated e-receipts.
TAKEAWAYS
This project taught me that in high-frequency transactional environments like POS systems, reducing friction is more important than increasing functionality. Even small decisions, such as combining steps in a flow, can significantly impact overall speed and usability.
By focusing on clarity in payment options and ensuring immediate system feedback after transactions, I learned how trust and efficiency are closely tied in payment experiences.
OUTCOME
The payment flow was designed from scratch to support fast and efficient transactions in a high-frequency retail environment.
Users can complete payments in fewer steps with clear separation between payment methods and immediate confirmation after checkout.
