PROJECT SCOPE

End-to-End App

mPOS 2.0

ROLE

UX/UI Design

PROJECT DURATION

3 Months

mPOS is a merchant-facing payment system designed to support QR-based transactions, enabling merchants to accept payments via Alipay and WeChat Pay in addition to traditional card flows.

THE PROBLEM

As mobile payments became increasingly common, many merchants relied on separate systems to manage QR-code transactions and track payment records. This created additional operational overhead and made it difficult to maintain a clear overview of business performance.

The goal of mPOS was to provide a unified platform that supports QR-based payments while giving merchants access to transaction history and revenue insights in a single experience.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Instead of traditional heavy research, this design was guided by constraints of real-world POS usage:

  • QR payments must be easy to initiate and complete

  • Payment status should be immediately visible

  • Transaction records need to be accessible

  • Revenue information should be easy to understand at a glance

INSIGHTS #1:

While completing payments quickly is the primary goal, merchants often need access to transaction records later for verification and issue resolution.

INSIGHTS #2:

Merchants rarely have time to review individual transactions one by one. Clear summaries and visual representations help them understand business performance more efficiently.

INSIGHTS #3:

Switching between payment processing and reporting systems increases operational complexity and makes daily management less efficient.

TARGET USERS

Merchants who accept QR-code payments and need a simple way to manage transactions, monitor revenue, and access payment records.

IDEATIONS

The solution explored how payment processing, transaction records, and revenue insights could be combined into a single merchant experience, reducing the need to switch between multiple tools.

HOW MIGHT WE...

#1:

Provide quick access to transaction records without interrupting the payment flow?

#2:

Help merchants understand business performance at a glance?

#3:

Reduce the need for merchants to switch between multiple tools when managing payments?

KEY FUNCTIONS

The mPOS system enables merchants to accept QR-code payments through mobile wallets such as Alipay and WeChat Pay while providing immediate payment confirmation during transactions.

Merchants can review transaction records, search and filter payment history, reprint receipts, and process refunds. Revenue data is also presented through visual summaries, helping merchants understand payment distribution across different channels.

Sitemap for mPOS 2.0

QR Code Payment

Generate QR codes for customers to complete payments via mobile wallets.

Payment Confirmation

Provide immediate feedback after successful transactions.

Transaction History

Allow merchants to review and verify previous payment records.

Revenue Dashboard

Present revenue performance through visual summaries and charts.

NICE TO HAVE

These ideas are not reflected in the prototype, but I believe would positively improve the user experience based on observed user needs

Advanced Revenue Analytics:

Provide period-based comparisons to help merchants identify revenue trends over time.

Export Transaction Reports:

Allow merchants to export transaction records for accounting and reporting purposes.

TAKEAWAYS

This project taught me that merchant tools need to support both action and understanding. While completing payments is the primary task, access to transaction records and business insights is equally important for day-to-day operations.

By combining payment processing, transaction management, and revenue visibility within a single experience, I learned how information structure can reduce operational complexity and help users make faster decisions.

OUTCOME

The final solution provides merchants with a unified platform for processing QR-code payments, managing transaction records, and monitoring revenue performance.

By bringing payment operations and business insights into a single experience, merchants can access the information they need more efficiently without relying on multiple tools.
